Obituary for John Thompson Jr.

John Thompson Jr.
John M., Jr.

On August 4th 2018, at the age of 86, John M. Thompson Jr. passed away peacefully after complications from pneumonia. Known throughout Plum Borough, John had a zest for life, for fun, and for family. He was an active member of The Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek for all of his 86 years – serving on many different committees and sessions. John attended and graduated from Randolph-Macon Military Academy. John served in the Army as a military police officer stationed in Killeen, Texas. After graduating from Slippery Rock State Teachers College, he started his career as an elementary school teacher for the Penn Hills school district and retired as associate teaching principal. John loved being a spectator (a rather vocal one) at all sorts of sporting events. These included professional sports, high school, college, little league, and “pick-up”. John also bowled regularly at Nesbit’s Lanes in Plum Borough, he golfed and was a proud member and grandson of a founding member of the Homewood Hunting camp. He was a member of Lodge #799 of the Masonic Order. John was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Florence H. Thompson and his loving wife of fifty years, Eleanor Bills Thompson. Father of John M. (Michelle) Thompson III; Grandfather of John M. “Jack” IV, Grace Ann Thompson, Brianna Burkette and Holden Burkette; brother of Margaret Ann (the late Jon) Fowler and the late George Thompson; brother-in-law of Mary Lloyd Thompson; brother-in-law of James and Patricia Stewart; also survived by many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek. Memorials to honor John may be made to the Mission Fund at the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek or Randolph-Macon Academy: The Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek – Mission Committee 550 Center New Texas Road Pittsburgh, PA 15239-1502 or Randolph-Macon Academy 200 Academy Drive Front Royal, VA 22630.
